“The first step in the limitation of the status of women was to take over from them the monopoly of the religious function” (Merlin Stone)

I was there in the Ancient Times.

Inanna

Ishtar

Elat

Isis

Baalat

Ashtoreth

Were my names.

Queen of Heaven

Mistress of Kingship

Mother-of-All.

I walked the Earth

Thousands of winters

Before the hordes of the warrior gods

Swarmed over the fruitful lands.

I was there in the Times of Suppression.

Tiamat

Lilith

Cybele

Anath

Were my names.

I was caged by my own sons.

Undressed of my regal vest

And confined to the Abyss

Of Forgetfulness and Disdain.

I was there in the Times of the Only Father.

Eve

Mary

Morgan

Diana

Were my names.

Harassed, oppressed, persecuted,

Cause of sin and torment for my torturers.

Hag, Witch, Demon, Lamia,

Evil, Liar, Sinner, Soulless.

I was there

And still I am.

Hidden in the hearts of women.

Waiting…

  1. I was wondering when reading this fine poem whether you have ever read ‘The Myth of the Goddess’ by Ann Baring and Jules Cashford. If not, I highly recommend it. It is clear you are already familiar with Earth Mother mythology but this book is remarkably eclectic in its material and I’m sure you would find it a rewarding read.
